February is clearly an excellent time of year to visit the desert (at least in the northern hemisphere), but when I had the opportunity to go to Arizona for a June conference I jumped at the chance to spend a couple of days experiencing the summer heat. Today began with the best breakfast of the trip so far – a hearty cooked meal at the restaurant, Hogan’s, adjacent to our hotel. Tom had a plentiful portion of biscuits and sausage gravy, whilst I stuck with the tried-and-tested combination of fried eggs, bacon and potatoes. Then we had a quick look around the local trading post, and a very interesting exhibit about WWII Navajo code talkers, before getting on the road.
Having seen Niagara Falls a few months ago, the Grand Canyon was next on our list of must-see American icons. We initially thought we might drive there from Las Vegas, but when we found out just how far it is (a little under 300 miles each way) a bus trip began to sound more appealing.
